Polypropylene has many benefits, beginning with low cost. Other advantages are:
- It is fairly easy to seam
- It hides the seam well when installed properly
- It can be installed in many different environments
- It has a good UVA resistance factor
- It holds up well in all climates
- It is highly recommended for practicing chipping and putting up to 50 yards.
Polypropylene is a form of plastic. As such, it requires some sand-fill for optimum performance. One reason is that the fibers can‘t stand upright on their own. The fill is also required to help prevent the fibers from matting down.
Heavily sand-filled greens will become hard over time and will require maintenance to assure good performance. Sand filled turfs require 4-12 pounds of sand per square foot and must be brushed and re-filled with sand if it becomes compacted or washed away.
With the correct sand-fill, polypropylene provides an excellent surface for receiving long approach shots. This is due to the sand dispersing the energy of the ball. The drawback of a sand-filled turf is the grainy effect when putting. The ball will roll faster with the grain than against the grain.
Polypropylene turf has about a 4 to 6 week break-in period which may be accelerated by rolling or light plate tamping.
